I currently train as a blue belt at Great Grappling Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Fort Mill, SC. I have two main instructors, Jeremy Arel and John Piper, both black belts under Roberto “Gordo” Correa. Check out GGBJJ website here to read more about it.
I spent close to two years training both BJJ and kickboxking at Ronin Athletics based in NYC with brown belt, Christian Montes under Felipe Costa (Team Brasa), and I’ve since moved from Brooklyn back to down where I grew up in the Carolina’s.
I’m currently focused on training and growing into my blue belt rather than competition. However, I competed once last year as a while belt in a NAGA competition up in NYC. I proudly came home with a silver in light-weight women’s nogi. I’m pretty eager to compete in gi during my blue belt years– perhaps towards late Summer or Fall this year.
Videos of my very first competition match, split into two parts:
Thoughts on this match: 1) corn-row are intimidating, 2) thank god for white belt mistakes…
Fun fact: I don’t have a BJJ “nickname” (which, I must say, I have no problem with at all), but a training partner from NYC, who happens to have a great sense of humor, liked to call me “Sharkeisha” or “Little Killer” to help lighten the mood as I attempted (and often times failed) to kick his butt. 😛
